Al Ridenour, the creative force behind LA’s annual Krampus Run and author of what’s been called “definitive work on Krampus,” The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas, is also a cradle-born horror fan. His lively slide and video lecture (aided by costumed cohorts) demonstrates why history is on the side of those of us eager to keep the Halloween spirit running right through Christmas. Far from unique, Krampus, Ridenour explains, is only one of a whole family of terrifying figures and folk tales with deep historical roots in a Christmas season that was once as much a time of fear as of celebration. Ridenour will also discuss opportunities for participating in the tradition locally with Krampus Los Angeles, his group producing an annual Krampus Run, Krampus play, mask-workshops, and other events.
