Weighing in at 190 pounds and hailing from Seattle, Washington, Mike Mekash has been a makeup artist for some time. His first makeup he can remember was painting the goalie on his recreation soccer team to resemble “King Diamond” from the band Merciful Fate. The team fittingly was named “Auburn Blood and Guts”. It would take a few years and many miles away from his Northwest home before he found his place in a makeup trailer on a Hollywood set. With a background as a freelance graphic artist and working for such esteemed snowboard and skateboard companies as Sims and Lib Tech, he got his call to create tattoo designs for the film industry. Parlaying that gig into being an on set makeup artist, he has had the pleasure of working with some really talented artists and keeps learning his craft both on and of set. Now working in the business for over 15 years, he recently received a Makeup and Hairstylist Guild award for prosthetic Makeup on “American Horror Story; Freak Show” and an Emmy for non-prosthetic makeup in Ryan Murphy’s “The Normal Heart”. Besides these two honors, he has 9 Emmy nominations and a win in jelly bean guessing contest in the 7th Grade. I swear I didn’t cheat! I meant he swears he didn’t cheat!!!
